A boxed geisha comb and hair pin set comprising a kushi (comb) and matching kogai (hair pin). CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear.
SIZE: comb 2 x 4 ins (5 x 10 cm); hairpin 7 ins (18 cm). Both comb and hair pin are carved from box wood and then covered with light brown lacquer which is further embellished with black and gold. The kushi or comb is the traditional rectangular shape with a curved back. The design on the front shows two exotic birds, probably cranes of storks. These birds represent the quality of faithfulness and were therefore frequently used on wedding combs. The ornament has a simpler design on the back. The matching kogai or hair pin is of the type which comes apart in the centre for insertion into the chignon. It is decorated with a complementary design to that on the comb.
The custom box is lined in white silk and is in good condition. It measures 8 x 3½ ins (20 x 9 cm). Such ornaments represent a link with traditional forms in Japanese hair accessories which have been used for many hundreds of years before Western styles began to supplant traditional forms.
